Species within the genus Telicota form a species complex, so confirming an exact species identity requires examination of the insect's genitalia. The larvae of Telicota ancilla feed on a variety of grasses, including Imperata cylindrica, Paspalum urvillei, and Sorghum halepense. Additional recorded host plants for this species are Ochlandra travancorica, Bambusa striata, and Bambusa wamin.
