About Tecticornia indica (Willd.) K.A.Sheph. & Paul G.Wilson

Tecticornia indica (Willd.) K.A.Sheph. & Paul G.Wilson is a succulent, salt-tolerant halophyte plant species that grows in salt marshes in tropical regions worldwide. It was originally classified in the family Chenopodiaceae, which is now incorporated into Amaranthaceae. This species does not produce true leaves; instead, its jointed stems and branches are modified to act as the plant’s main photosynthetic structures. Its fine flowers are borne within scale-like structures. It produces round, green fruits, with a hard capsule that holds multiple hairy seeds. The seeds of this plant are dimorphic, meaning they come in two distinct forms. The Walmajarri people of the southern Kimberley region know this species by the common name Mungily.
