About Tangara velia (Linnaeus, 1758)

The opal-rumped tanager, Tangara velia, is a bird species that belongs to the family Thraupidae. It inhabits the Amazon and Atlantic Forest regions of South America. Populations of this species located in the Atlantic Forest have a much paler chest than populations found elsewhere. Because of this difference, the Atlantic Forest population has often been classified as a separate species called the silvery-breasted tanager, Tangara cyanomelas. Most taxonomic authorities currently recognize this population as a subspecies of the opal-rumped tanager instead.
