About Tangara chilensis (Vigors, 1832)

The paradise tanager, Tangara chilensis, is a medium-sized, brilliantly multicolored songbird. It ranges in length from 13.5 to 15 cm (5.3 to 6 inches). It has a light green head, sky blue underparts, and black plumage on its upper body. The brilliance of this species' vivid structural colours is enhanced by underlying achromatic feather layers that are either black or white. The colour of its rump is either yellow and red, or all red, depending on the subspecies. Its beak is black, and its legs are grey. This bird is native to the Amazon rainforest. It occurs in humid tropical and subtropical forests across the western and northern Amazon Basin in South America, and can be found in Venezuela, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Brazil. Despite its scientific species name chilensis, the paradise tanager is not found in Chile.
