About Tangara callophrys (Cabanis, 1849)

The opal-crowned tanager, scientifically named Tangara callophrys (Cabanis, 1849), is a species of bird in the tanager family Thraupidae. It is one of 49 species that make up the genus Tangara.

This bird's natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests. Its range covers the eastern Andes drainages that lead into the western Amazon Basin. It can be found in southern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, and a region of northwestern Bolivia. In Brazil, it occurs in southwestern to western Amazonas state and Acre.

The species has one main contiguous range centered on Amazonian eastern Peru and Ecuador, southeastern Colombia, and the extreme west of Amazonas state, Brazil. In the southern portion of the range, all of Acre state is included, along with southern Peru, and a border region in extreme northwestern Bolivia. A small separate disjunct population exists 100 km further west, located in southern Colombia.
