About Tagetes lemmonii A.Gray

Tagetes lemmonii A.Gray is a shrub that can grow up to 240 cm (8 feet) tall. Its leaves can reach up to 12 cm (4.8 inches) in length, and are pinnately divided into 3 to 5 leaflets. Each leaflet is narrowly lance-shaped, with teeth along its edge. In cultivation, Tagetes lemmonii blooms from fall through spring, and can sometimes bloom for up to 10 months out of the year. At maturity, it can reach 8 feet in both height and width. When disturbed, its foliage releases a strong pungent scent. This species is very drought tolerant in Mediterranean climates, and is widely used in California gardens. It can tolerate light frosts without sustaining damage.
