Ear Structure

This species, the European free-tailed bat, has large, broad ears. Each ear has a very small tragus, a backward-pointing projection that helps direct sound into the ear.

Muzzle and Common Names

Its muzzle has wrinkled lips, which makes its face look similar to a dog's face. This feature is the origin of its other common names: bulldog bat and mastiff bat.

Tail Structure

Its tail is fleshy and robust, and the rear third of the tail is not connected to any flight membranes.

Fur Characteristics

Its fur is short and even. The dorsal (upper) surface of the body is greyish-black with a brownish shine, while the ventral (under) surface is paler.

Its ears, wing membranes, and tail membranes are all black, and the bat produces an unpleasant smell.
