Syzygium polyanthum (Wight) Walp. is a tree that grows at elevations ranging from low up to 1400 meters, and can reach a maximum height of 25 meters. Its leaves have a slightly bitter taste and produce an astringent effect. Both fresh and dried leaves of this species are used in the cuisines of Sumatra, Java, Madura, and Bali. It is an ingredient in dishes including sayur lodeh and nasi gurih. In Suriname, the species is called 'salam blad' and is widely used in Javanese cuisine, most often in dishes such as soto soup and various stews. Due to its unique flavor, there is no suitable substitute for it.
