About Syzygium guineense (Willd.) DC.

Syzygium guineense (Willd.) DC. can grow as a tree, a shrub, or a pyrophytic subshrub, and its growth form depends on its habitat. When growing as a tree, it usually reaches 10 to 15 meters in height, though some individual specimens have been recorded growing as tall as 25 meters. The trunk is broad and fluted, and the crown is rounded and heavy. The bark is smooth when the plant is young, and becomes rough and black as it ages. The branches are drooping, while the stems are thick and angular. Young leaves are purple-red, and mature leaves turn dark green. All leaves are shiny and smooth on both surfaces, with a long, rounded tip growing on a short grooved stalk. The flowers of this species have white, showy stamens, and are arranged in dense branched clusters 10 centimeters across. They produce a honey-sweet scent that attracts many insects. This species has a wide distribution across sub-Saharan Africa, and also occurs in the southwestern Arabian Peninsula. It can grow in a wide variety of habitats, including lowland and montane forests, forest edges, woodlands, humid savannas, swamps, and mangrove edges. It can grow from sea level up to 2,500 meters in elevation. It prefers moist soils with a high water table alongside rivers, but can also grow in open woodland. In southern Ethiopia, Syzygium guineense is a widely valued shade tree for homesteads and home gardens. It is classified as a famine food, eaten by subsistence farmers during years when their crops fail.
