About Syncarpha speciosissima (L.) B.Nord.
Syncarpha speciosissima is a shrublet with erect stems, reaching 20–60 cm (7.9–23.6 in) in height. The entire plant is covered in white woolly hairs, and it produces new shoots annually. Its light grey-green leaves are oblong or linear, and grow clustered close to the stem base. Between July and January, disc-shaped flower heads develop at the ends of long stems. These flower heads measure 3–4 cm (1.2–1.6 in) in diameter. The central disc of the flower head starts yellow, and turns brown as it ages. The flower head is surrounded by sharply pointed, petal-like bracts. These bracts have a papery texture, and are white or cream in colour. This species is endemic to the Western Cape of South Africa. It grows on sandstone slopes ranging from the Cape Peninsula to Tradouws Pass. It favors upper mountain slopes, and grows in open areas between bushes.
