About Sympistis chionanthi J.E.Smith, 1797
Sympistis chionanthi, commonly known as the grey o moth or fringe-tree sallow, is a moth species belonging to the family Noctuidae. This species was first formally described by James Edward Smith in 1797. Its range extends from North Dakota to Nova Scotia, and south at least as far as Virginia and Kansas. Its habitats include deciduous woodlands such as riparian woodlands, as well as plantations and farmyard shelterbelts. The wingspan of adult moths measures approximately 33 to 38 mm. Adults are active in flight from August to October, with one generation produced each year. The larvae feed on species of the genera Fraxinus and Chionanthus, which includes Chionanthus virginicus, and may also feed on other genera in the Oleaceae family. Larvae can be found active in May and June.
