About Symphyotrichum sericeum (Vent.) G.L.Nesom
Symphyotrichum sericeum (Vent.) G.L.Nesom is a perennial herb that grows from rhizomes, and may reach 70 centimeters (2 1⁄4 feet) in height. Its leaves have a sericeous texture, which gives them a silvery-green coloration. The plant's inflorescences are erect and grow parallel to one another. The involucral bracts of its flower heads range in shape from ovate to lanceolate, and are also sericeous. The flower heads hold purple ray florets, and disk florets that start out pink and turn purple as they mature. The fruit produced by this species is a cypsela. This species is native to central North America, where it occurs in the following states and provinces: Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Manitoba, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Ontario, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin. It grows in dry sandy or partially sandy soil, limestone areas, and calcareous soil, at elevations of 100 to 500 meters (330 to 1,640 feet) or higher.
