About Symphyotrichum porteri (A.Gray) G.L.Nesom
Symphyotrichum porteri, previously classified as Aster porteri, is a species of flowering plant in the Asteraceae family. It is endemic to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, found only in the U.S. states of Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico. It is commonly called Porter's aster. This is a perennial herbaceous plant that can grow between 10 and 50 centimeters, or 4 to 20 inches, tall. The flower heads of this species have white ray florets, which are rarely pinkish. Their disk florets start yellow, change to pink, and then turn brown as they mature. S. porteri grows at elevations ranging from 1,800 to 2,900 meters, which is 5,900 to 9,500 feet. Due to its limited geographic range, NatureServe lists this species as Vulnerable, with a global ranking of G3. In the state of Wyoming, it is classified as Critically Imperiled, with a state ranking of S1.
