About Symphyotrichum ontarionis (Wiegand) G.L.Nesom
Symphyotrichum ontarionis grows in colonies. Individual plants reach 20 to 120 centimeters (3⁄4 to 4 feet) in height, with herbaceous stems that grow singly from long, thick rhizomes. Its leaves are alternately arranged and simple. Flowering occurs between July and October; flowers have white ray florets and yellow centers made up of disk florets.
This species is distributed from Ontario and Quebec in Canada south to North Carolina and Texas in the United States. S. ontarionis var. ontarionis is present across most of this range, while S. ontarionis var. glabratum replaces it in northern Ontario, Quebec, and Michigan. Symphyotrichum ontarionis most commonly grows in shaded, moist soils in moist forests and alongside stream banks.
