Symphyotrichum ciliolatum (Lindl.) Á.Löve & D.Löve can grow up to 1.2 metres (3 feet 11 inches) tall, and spreads through long rhizomes. Its leaves are usually heart-shaped, with winged petioles. This species flowers from late July through October. It has blue or bluish purple ray florets, and yellow disc florets that turn reddish purple as they mature. Symphyotrichum ciliolatum grows in open forests, forest edges, and thickets, and can also be found along streams, trails, and roadsides. Its range covers all of Canada from Yukon to Newfoundland, and the northern United States from Montana to New York.
