About Symphoricarpos mollis Nutt. ex Torr. & A.Gray

Symphoricarpos mollis Nutt. ex Torr. & A.Gray is a low-growing, creeping, straggling shrub. Its stems can reach several feet in length, while the plant’s maximum height is limited to about 0.5 metres (1+1⁄2 ft). It reproduces both via rhizomes and from seed. Its leaves are arranged oppositely on the stems, and the stems themselves are flexible. This species produces clusters of rounded, bell-shaped red or pink flowers, followed by spherical or bulbous white or pink-tinted fruits that measure around 1 centimetre (1⁄2 in) across. This shrub occurs in western North America, ranging from British Columbia to California, and extending inland to Nevada and Idaho. It grows well in warm climates and can tolerate both full intense sun and permanent full shade. It is native to chaparral ecosystems, particularly those along coastlines.
