About Sympetrum internum Montgomery, 1943
Sympetrum internum, commonly known as the cherry-faced meadowhawk, is a dragonfly species belonging to the genus Sympetrum. This species is distributed across northern and central regions of the United States, and across most of Canada, including the southern parts of the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Members of this species have brown abdomens, which darken to red when individuals of both sexes reach maturity. The sides of the abdomen are marked with black triangles, and all individuals have black legs. Some female individuals have amber-colored markings in the basal areas of their wings. As the common name cherry-faced meadowhawk suggests, mature individuals have dark red faces. Adults of this species range in size from 21–36 mm (0.83–1.42 in). The range of Sympetrum internum overlaps with the ranges of the ruby meadowhawk, saffron-winged meadowhawk, and white-faced meadowhawk, and it is difficult to distinguish this species from these three related meadowhawks.
