About Syagrus cearensis Noblick
Syagrus cearensis Noblick, commonly called coco-babão in Portuguese, is a naturally occurring palm species that is endemic to Brazil. It is native to the Brazilian states of Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, and Ceará. The species has its highest rate of occurrence in Ceará state, which the species scientific epithet references. Within Ceará, it grows in Atlantic Forest environments, sandbanks, transition areas into Caatinga scrub, and on the slopes of plateaus.
This species is very similar to Syagrus oleracea, but can be distinguished by several key traits. Syagrus cearensis produces fruit with yellow flesh, while Syagrus oleracea has predominantly green fruits even when mature. Additionally, Syagrus cearensis grows in clumps, unlike the upright solitary growth habit of Syagrus oleracea. The fruit of Syagrus cearensis is a yellow fibro-mucilaginous drupe with a sweet flavor, and it is often sold in street markets in its native regions.
