About Swallenia alexandrae (Swallen) Soderstr. & H.F.Decker
Swallenia alexandrae is a coarse, tufted perennial grass that grows in sand from thick rhizomes. It can be identified by its stiffly erect clumps, sharp leaf blades, and erect pale-colored panicle inflorescences. Also known as Eureka dunegrass, this rare grass is endemic to Inyo County, California. It only grows on one isolated dune system: the Eureka Valley Sand Dunes located in the Eureka Valley of the Mojave Desert, within the boundaries of Death Valley National Park. Only five known occurrences of this species have been recorded.
