About Suillus kaibabensis Thiers
Suillus kaibabensis Thiers is a hardy yellow mushroom species belonging to the genus Suillus. While yellow is its primary color, it can also develop varying degrees of brown and white tones. Its stem (stipe) measures around 2–4 cm in length and 1–2 cm in thickness. The cap is broad, and ranges from convex to flat in shape, which is typical for many bolete species. The stipe is smooth, marked with olive-brown spots, and may be reddish-brown at its base. The pores are yellowish-brown, and can turn salmon color as the mushroom ages. Ecologically, Suillus kaibabensis grows in the Four Corners region, covering Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado. This species grows exclusively with Ponderosa pine. It forms mycorrhizal associations, and requires these trees to survive. It produces fruiting bodies from late July to September, the region’s wetter season.
