About Strymon astiocha
Strymon astiocha shows sexual size dimorphism, where males are approximately the size of Strymon alexis. Its wingspan is comparable to that of other Strymon species found in the same region. The forewings are white, while the body, breast, and very short tail-like projection of this species have brown coloration. Its antennae are black with white banding. The hindwings feature distinctive markings: a black line runs in front of the wing fringes, with separate dark stripes extending outward from this line into the wing margins. Above this black line, a whitish line runs across the posterior section of the hindwings, with 2 to 3 large black spots positioned to the right and left of the hindmost branch of the median vein. On the underside of the forewings, the area extending from the wing base for roughly two-thirds of the total wing length is brownish-gray. The underside forewing pattern consists of a brown shadow, a row of small dark-brown crescent-shaped spots, a white zigzag line with gray filling, a row of gray spots, a fine dark line, and white-and-gray checkered fringes. The underside of the hindwings is white, marked with numerous gray-brown spots and two crossbands made up of small brown spots with black borders. The base of the hindwings is dark-spotted and dusty-looking, with a black spot located above the tail-like projection. A fine dark line runs in front of the black-and-white checkered fringes of the hindwings. Strymon astiocha is distributed in Brazil, with confirmed occurrence records from the states of Rio de Janeiro and Rondônia.
