About Strymon albata (C.Felder & R.Felder, 1865)

Strymon albata, commonly called the white hairstreak, is a butterfly species that belongs to the Lycaenidae family. It was first described by Cajetan Felder and Rudolf Felder in 1865. Its distribution ranges from southern Texas in the United States, south through Costa Rica to Colombia, Venezuela, and the island of Trinidad. The wingspan of adult Strymon albata measures between 29 and 35 millimeters. In southern Texas, this species has two generations per year, with adult butterflies active on the wing from June through December. In the tropical parts of its range, adult Strymon albata fly year-round. Adult individuals feed on flower nectar from a variety of flower species, including blue boneset. The caterpillar larvae of this species feed on the flower buds and young fruits of Abutilon incanum.
