About Strophanthus gratus (Wall. & Hook.) Baill.
Strophanthus gratus (Wall. & Hook.) Baill. is a woody liana that can reach a maximum length of 25 metres (80 ft), with a trunk diameter of up to 10 centimetres (4 in). Its fragrant flowers have a white corolla that is red or purple at the top, along with pink corona lobes. This species is native to tropical Africa, with a range extending from Senegal in the west, east and south to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It has become naturalized in Taiwan, and also in Trinidad and Tobago. Strophanthus gratus has been used in local traditional medicine: ouabain obtained from the plant's seeds is used to treat heart failure. It has also been used as an ingredient in arrow poison.
