About Streptanthus major (M.E.Jones) Jeps.
This flowering plant species, currently listed as Streptanthus major (M.E.Jones) Jeps., is also known under the synonym Caulanthus major. It belongs to the mustard family Brassicaceae and has the common name slender wild cabbage. It is native to the Great Basin and surrounding regions of the United States, where it grows in dry mountain slopes and similar dry, open habitats. It is a perennial herb that produces an erect, hollow stem growing from a woody caudex. It is most morphologically similar to its close relative Caulanthus crassicaulis. Its leaves grow in a basal rosette at the base of the stem and also along the length of the stem; leaf edges can be smooth, toothed, or deeply cut. The largest leaves are located on the lower part of the stem, and can reach up to 9 centimeters (3.5 inches) long. Each flower is enclosed in thick, sometimes hairy sepals that are very dark in color when newly opened, usually a deep purple shade. Narrow, dark-veined petals emerge from the tip of the sepal enclosure. The fruit produced by this plant is a thin silique that can grow up to 13 centimeters (5.1 inches) long.
