About Stilpnia peruviana (Desmarest, 1806)

The black-backed tanager, with the scientific name Stilpnia peruviana, is a bird species that belongs to the Thraupidae family. This species is endemic to the forests and shrubs of south-eastern Brazil. When this species was first formally described, it was incorrectly thought to originate from Peru. This error resulted in the misleading specific epithet peruviana for its scientific name. The black-backed tanager is closely related to the chestnut-backed tanager, and the two species have sometimes been classified as a single conspecific species. Currently, the black-backed tanager is threatened by habitat loss.
