About Stereum lobatum (Kunze ex Fr.) Fr.
Stereum lobatum (Kunze ex Fr.) Fr. grows in a fan-like shape with a narrowed base. Like most species in the Stereum genus, it has an overall fan or oyster-like shape, spreading outward from where it attaches to wooden substrate. Its upper surface becomes zonate as felted hairs fall away, revealing the brown color underneath. The cap ranges from 1.5 to 8 centimetres (1โ2 to 3 inches) wide, and the flesh is thin and tough. This fungus has a white spore print. When bruised, its pale brownish yellow tissue changes color to bright yellow; moistening the bruised area sometimes helps make this color change easier to see. It grows on dead hardwood, and is found in Eastern North America, with a likely pantropical distribution.
