About Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walter) Kuntze
Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walter) Kuntze, commonly called St. Augustine grass, is a dark green grass with broad, flat blades. It spreads through aboveground stolons, which are widely known as "runners", and grows into a dense layer. This grass is naturally found on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, including most of the southeastern United States, Texas, Mexico, Central America, and South America. It also grows naturally in most Caribbean and Mediterranean areas. It has escaped from cultivation and become established outside its native range in California, Hawaii, many Pacific islands, South Africa, and New Zealand. St. Augustine grass grows best in tropical climates. It is most often found in lagoons, marshes, and on shorelines, growing in locations that have ample moisture. As for its uses, St. Augustine grass is commonly grown in pastures and on ranches. It is also a popular lawn grass, and its popularity rivals that of bermudagrass. However, St. Augustine grass is somewhat less tolerant of drought than bermudagrass.
