About Stenocereus kerberi (K.Schum.) A.C.Gibson & K.E.Horak

Stenocereus kerberi is a columnar cactus that reaches 2 to 3 meters in height, and frequently forms dense clusters of branched shoots. In cross-section, its shoots have a distinct angular shape, and measure 3 to 8 centimeters in diameter. Every shoot has four notched ribs that are split into prominent humps. This cactus has 1 to 4 grayish central spines that are 4 to 5 centimeters long, plus 10 to 16 grayish radial spines that measure 1 to 2 centimeters in length. It produces slender, funnel-shaped, deep pink flowers that open during the day; these flowers are 10 to 12 centimeters long. Its spherical red fruits grow up to 2.5 centimeters in diameter, and retain leftover flower remnants. Stenocereus kerberi is endemic to Mexico, where it occurs in the Mexican states of Colima, Jalisco, Nayarit, and Sinaloa. This species grows in tropical deciduous forest, at elevations between 0 and 800 meters above sea level.
