About Stenocarpus sinuatus (Otto & A.Dietr.) Endl.
Stenocarpus sinuatus (Otto & A.Dietr.) Endl., commonly called the Firewheel Tree, is a medium to large tree that can reach up to 40 metres (130 ft) in height, with a trunk up to 75 cm (30 in) in diameter. Its bark is greyish brown, irregular and not smooth, and the base of its cylindrical trunk has flanges. Leaves are alternate and variable in shape, ranging from simple to pinnatifid, with wavy margins. Leaves are 12 to 20 cm long, and leaf venation is clearly visible on both the upper and lower leaf surfaces. Their distinct leaf form marks them as easily identifiable members of the Protea family. This species produces ornamental bright red flowers that grow in umbels arranged in a circular formation, which gives the tree its common name of Firewheel Tree. Flowering occurs mostly between February and March. The fruit is a boat-shaped follicle 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4 in) long, containing many thin 12 mm-long seeds. Fruit matures between January and July. Regeneration from fresh seed happens quickly, and cuttings also root easily. This tree is a popular ornamental species.
