About Stenacris vitreipennis (Marschall, 1836)

Stenacris vitreipennis, commonly called the glassy-winged toothpick grasshopper or glassy-winged locust, is a species of spur-throat toothpick grasshopper in the family Acrididae. It is distributed across North America and South America. Adult males of this species average 24–30 mm in length, while adult females average 27–40 mm. This species has a green to brownish green, long, slender, pointed head, along with sword-shaped antennae and a spine located beneath the head in front of the forelegs. This spine distinguishes it from the somewhat similar slant-faced grasshoppers of the subfamily Gomphocerinae. Stenacris vitreipennis is typically found living among semiaquatic vegetation, including cattails (Typha spp.) and pickerelweed (Pontederia cordata).
