About Stellaria graminea L.
Stellaria graminea L. is a rhizomatous perennial herb. It produces branching stems that may be prostrate, sprawling, trailing, or erect, reaching up to around 90 centimeters long. The stems are four-angled, weak, and hairless. Pairs of linear or lance-shaped leaves grow along the stems; each leaf is 1–4 centimeters (0.4–1.6 inches) long, with smooth edges, and is hairless aside from some hairs along the leaf bases. The inflorescence holds several flowers, each positioned on a short pedicel. Each flower has five pointed green sepals, each a few millimeters long, usually lined with hairs. There are five white petals; each petal is so deeply lobed that it appears to be two separate petals. This species has 10 stamens. Its seeds are reddish brown, and measure 1 millimeter (0.04 inches) in diameter. This plant is native to Eurasia, and is widespread as an introduced species and common weed in many other temperate regions of the world. It grows in many types of habitat, including lawns and roadsides.
