About Stauroderus scalaris (Fischer von Waldheim, 1846)
Adult males of Stauroderus scalaris reach a body length of 18–20 millimetres (0.71–0.79 in), while adult females grow to 24–27 millimetres (0.94–1.06 in). This species is the largest grasshopper native to Europe. The body's basic base color ranges from pale or bright green to yellow, with dark-brownish wings and tegmina. The femora of the hind legs range in color from yellow to reddish. In males, the median and ulnar wing cells are quite large, and have parallel veins. Adult Stauroderus scalaris usually live in colonies, and males produce whirring stridulations to attract females. These grasshoppers can be found from July through September, most commonly in high-altitude alpine meadows and pastures. This species occurs across most of Europe, the Near East, and the eastern Palearctic realm.
