About Standfussiana lucernea Linnaeus, 1758

Scientific name: Standfussiana lucernea Linnaeus, 1758. Technical description and variation: The wingspan of this species ranges from 36 to 46 mm. The forewings are pale grey with a greenish flush; the black lines are outlined by pale grey. There are broad dark median and submarginal shading patches. The orbicular stigma is grey with a pale edge, and is usually not distinct. The reniform stigma is a dark lunule. The fringe is grey. The hindwings are fuscous, becoming darker toward the termen, with a white fringe. Males are typically darker overall than females. The form found in Scotland, which Stephens named renigera, is blackish grey, and much darker than specimens from mainland Europe. The form cataleuca Boisd. has a prominently marked dark median shade.
