About Sporophila pileata (P.L.Sclater, 1865)
The pearly–bellied seedeater, with the scientific name Sporophila pileata, is a bird species that belongs to the family Thraupidae. Before February 2012, this species was grouped together with the copper seedeater (S. bouvreuil), and the combined taxon was known as the capped seedeater. The pearly-bellied seedeater can be found in southern Brazil, Paraguay, northern Uruguay, and northeastern Argentina. Its natural habitat is dry savanna. Like other capuchinos, the local Spanish name for this group of seedeaters, the pearly-bellied seedeater is currently experiencing significant population declines. These declines are caused by two main factors: illegal trapping of the species for the pet trade, and the conversion of native grasslands to agricultural land, which has resulted in widespread habitat loss.
