Morelet's seedeater has the scientific name Sporophila morelleti, originally described by Bonaparte in 1850. It is a passerine bird that belongs to the typical seedeater genus Sporophila. Its distribution extends from a small area along the Rio Grande near San Ignacio, Texas in the United States, south through eastern Mexico and Central America all the way to Panama. It primarily lives in tropical and subtropical grasslands, savannas, and shrublands. It can also occur in pastures, arable land, and heavily degraded former forests.
