About Sporobolus schoenoides (L.) P.M.Peterson

Sporobolus schoenoides (L.) P.M.Peterson is a grass species with three common names: swamp pricklegrass, swamp timothy, and cowpond grass. It is native to Europe, but has been introduced to and become established on most other continents. This is an annual grass with purple-tinted green stems that forms mats and low clumps in areas near water. It has leaves with wide sheaths; these large sheaths partially cover the plant's inflorescences. The clublike inflorescence can grow longer than 4 centimeters and wider than 2 centimeters. It has a chunky texture, and is colored purple or purplish-green.
