About Sporobolus junceus (P.Beauv.) Kunth

Sporobolus junceus (P.Beauv.) Kunth is a grass species commonly called pineywoods dropseed. It is native to the southern United States. This species is a perennial bunchgrass, with stems that can grow up to one meter tall. Its leaves reach up to 30 centimeters in length, can be flat or rolled, and are blue-green in color. The inflorescence is a pyramidal panicle with spreading branches, lined with purplish or reddish spikelets. S. junceus grows in habitats including pine or scrub barrens, open pinelands, and open oak woods. Livestock sometimes graze this grass, but it is not among the more palatable grass species. When more palatable grasses are consumed by grazing, S. junceus becomes more abundant, so its presence indicates a pasture of declining quality.
