About Sporobolus cynosuroides (L.) P.M.Peterson & Saarela

Sporobolus cynosuroides, a grass species, goes by the common names big cordgrass and salt reedgrass. It is native to the East Coast and Gulf Coast of the United States, growing in coastal habitats including marshes, lagoons, and bays. This is a rhizomatous perennial grass that can reach up to 10 feet in height. Its leaves grow up to 24 inches long and up to one inch wide, and it has a hairy ligule. The stem can measure up to ¾ of an inch in diameter at its base. The inflorescence holds up to 40 spikes, each up to 3 inches long. This grass grows in flooded saline soils, such as those found in salt marshes. It is commonly found growing alongside marsh-hay cordgrass (Spartina patens) and common reed (Phragmites australis).
