About Sporobolus compositus (Poir.) Merr.

Sporobolus compositus (Poir.) Merr. is commonly known by several common names: composite dropseed, tall dropseed, rough dropseed, and meadow dropseed. This species is a native grass that grows in North American prairies, reaching heights of two to four feet. It is common across the Great Plains region, and can be found in most states within the United States. It flowers between August and September. Its common name "dropseed" comes from the fact that its grain falls away readily. This grass has little value as a food source for grazing, and its palatability decreases as the plant ages.
