About Sporobolus airoides (Torr.) Torr.
Sporobolus airoides (Torr.) Torr. is a perennial bunchgrass that grows in clumps of stems reaching up to 2 meters (6.6 feet) tall. The bases of its stems are thick, tough, and have an almost woody texture. Its fibrous leaves are green or gray-green, and can grow up to 60 centimeters (24 inches) long. Its inflorescence is long, generally wide open and spreading, and holds yellow spikelets with purplish bases. This grass produces abundant seeds; these seeds are often dispersed by flowing water, and germinate after becoming embedded in sediment. In cultivation, it is a valuable grass for habitat restoration and revegetation projects on disturbed sites in the Southwest United States, particularly in riparian zones of California and the Intermountain West.
