About Spodoptera dolichos Fabricius, 1794

Spodoptera dolichos, commonly known as the dolichos armyworm moth or sweetpotato armyworm moth, is a species of moth in the Noctuidae family. It was first formally described by Johan Christian Fabricius in 1794. Its distribution ranges from the southern United States, including the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Texas, south through Costa Rica into South America, reaching as far south as Argentina. In the United States, individual specimens can be found as far north as Kentucky and Maryland. The adult moth has a wingspan of approximately 40 millimetres, equal to 1+5⁄8 inches. The larval caterpillars of this species are polyphagous, feeding on a wide variety of both wild and cultivated plants.
