About Spirodela punctata (G.Mey.) C.H.Thomps.

Spirodela punctata (G.Mey.) C.H.Thomps., also known as Landoltia punctata, has the common name dotted duckmeat. It is a species of duckweed belonging to the subfamily Lemnoideae. Morphologically, this species is intermediate between the genus Lemna and other species in the genus Spirodela. In 1999, D.H. Les and D.J. Crawford proposed moving this species into a new genus Landoltia, which would contain only L. punctata. This proposal was based on biochemical and DNA research. Originally, S. punctata was native to Australia and South Asia. Currently, it also grows in the southern and eastern United States.
