About Spiranthes magnicamporum Sheviak
Spiranthes magnicamporum Sheviak is a perennial orchid commonly called Lady's Tresses. It produces a spiral of white flowers in the fall. It is closely related to the Spiranthes cernua complex, and was not recognized as a separate species until the 1970s. S. magnicamporum can be distinguished from related species by its much stronger scent, later flowering time, and lateral sepals that spread over the top of the flower. Its scent is comparable to the smell of coumarin. This species occurs mostly in the United States, with part of its range extending into Canada. Research on interactions between this Lady's Tresses and its pollinating partners has only been carried out on the Southern Plain population. The most common pollinators recorded there are southern plain bumble bees, sweat bees, eastern carpenter bees, and two-spotted bumble bees. No studies have been conducted on mycorrhizal associations for this species.
