About Sphinx vashti Strecker

Sphinx vashti, commonly known as the Vashti sphinx, is a moth species that belongs to the Sphingidae family. Its distribution covers North America, ranging from British Columbia eastward to Manitoba, and southward to southern California, Nevada, central Arizona, New Mexico, and western Texas. This species shows high variability in wing pattern and overall size. Its forewings vary in color from pale to very dark gray, with paler gray coloring at the base of the costa, the wing tip, and along the outer margin. A series of black dashes runs along the forewing, with the uppermost dash extending all the way to the wing tip. The hindwings are black with white bands. Vashti sphinx moths produce one generation of offspring per year. The larvae of Sphinx vashti feed on snowberry (Symphoricarpos albus) and coralberry (Symphoricarpos orbiculatus).
