This species, Sphinx pinastri Linnaeus, 1758, has grey wings marked with black dashes, and a wingspan ranging from 2 and 3/4 inches to 3 and 1/2 inches (70 to 89 mm). The back of its thorax is grey, with two dark bands running around both sides. Depending on the location, adult moths fly from April to August. For its life cycle, female Sphinx pinastri lay eggs in groups of two or three along pine or spruce needles.
