About Sphinx maurorum Jordan, 1931
Sphinx maurorum, commonly known as the southern pine hawkmoth, is a moth species that belongs to the Sphingidae family. This species was first formally described by Karl Jordan in 1931. It can be found on the Iberian Peninsula, and in southern and central France, reaching as far north as Corrèze. Its range extends south to the Atlas and Rif mountains of North Africa, and there are also documented records of this species from Corsica. The wingspan of adult Sphinx maurorum ranges from 70 to 80 mm. This species has one to two generations each year. Most often, it produces just one generation, with adults active in flight from mid-July to early August. In some years, adults fly from May to June and again in August, indicating two generations. The larvae of Sphinx maurorum feed on plant species from the Pinus and Cedrus genera, particularly favoring Pinus halepensis and Pinus pinaster.
