About Sphinx canadensis Boisduval

This species, Sphinx canadensis Boisduval, has an adult wingspan ranging from 70 to 85 mm. Across the areas where its range overlaps with the hermit sphinx (Sphinx eremitus), Sphinx canadensis is often confused with that species, but it can be distinguished by the absence of a white spot that S. eremitus has. The forewings of Sphinx canadensis are gray-brown with black streaks running along the veins, and this pattern is interrupted by white lines along the outer margin. The hindwings have a pattern of alternating black and white bands. This moth is found in the northeastern United States, and its range extends as far north as Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
