About Speerschneidera euploca (Tuck.) Trevis.

Speerschneidera is a genus of lichen-forming fungi in the family Leprocaulaceae that contains only one species. The genus was circumscribed by Italian botanist Vittore Benedetto Antonio Trevisan de Saint-Léon in 1861, with Speerschneidera euploca designated as its type species. This lichen was first formally described in 1858 by Edward Tuckerman, under the original name Physcia euploca. Speerschneidera euploca is a crustose lichen that occurs in the southern United States and Mexico. The genus name Speerschneidera honors Julius Ferdinand Speerschneider (1825–1903), a German doctor, teacher, and naturalist. Speerschneider worked as a curator for the natural history collection of Frederick Charles, Prince of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt; this collection later became the Natural History Museum in Rudolstadt.
