About Spatula versicolor (Vieillot, 1816)
This species, Spatula versicolor, has a black cap that extends below the eyes, a bluish bill with a yellow tip, and a green speculum with a white border. Female individuals have slightly duller plumage, and less yellow coloring at the base of the beak. The Puna teal was previously classified as a subspecies of Spatula versicolor. Currently, two subspecies are recognized: S. versicolor versicolor, the northern silver teal, found in Paraguay, southern Bolivia, and southern Brazil; and S. versicolor fretensis, the southern silver teal, located in southern Chile, Argentina, and the Falkland Islands.
