About Sparganothis pilleriana (Denis & Schiffermüller), 1775
This species has the scientific name Sparganothis pilleriana (Denis & Schiffermüller), 1775. Females have a wingspan of 17–22 mm, while males have a wingspan of 15–20 mm. This species can be distinguished from other tortrix moths by its long labial palps. The moth produces one generation per year, with adults flying from July to August. In July and August, females lay batches of forty to sixty eggs directly on the species' foodplants. Newly laid eggs are initially emerald-green, then turn greenish-yellow before eventually becoming yellow. Eggs hatch in September. Larvae of this species overwinter, then continue feeding until May and June. Larvae have a black head, a black prothoracic plate, a pale green to greyish green body, and a narrow darker green dorsal line. Larvae feed inside folded and spun leaves of various herbaceous plants. Pupation takes place inside the rolled leaves.
